In the early years, Ikea did not sell the furniture for which it is now famous; instead, it sold a variety of household items, like soap, pens, and stockings, at first locally and then by mail order through print advertisements.
Ikea Hacking – Kallax and Linnmon Mega Desk
The first annual Ikea catalogue was issued in When Ikea began retailing furniture at factory prices by mail order in the early s, the established furniture trade saw this move as disruptive to their business. Ikea was not permitted to exhibit in the major furniture fair in Stockholm for decades, and suppliers were encouraged to cease working with Ikea.
Kamprad was not deterred. When problems with Swedish suppliers came to a head, Ikea moved production to Denmark and Poland. Still, sales volumes steadily grew, and Ikea opened more showrooms.
InIkea opened its first store outside of Sweden, in Norway, followed in by a location in Denmark. Also in the s, Ikea was one of the first furniture companies to introduce self-service storage shopping for customers and computer systems for distribution management. InIkea opened its first store in China. Over the decades, Ikea has worked with myriad designers, both inside and outside Sweden.
Today, Ikea has more than showrooms in nearly 30 countries and has built an incomparable international identity. Yearly worldwide sales have reached over 28 billion.

The only part of this build that takes a bit of time, is how you choose to finish the wood, so you could absolutely finish this build in a very easy day, if you went with a simple finish- but typically your gonna be putting multiple coats of finish on the wood, so those need time to dry. At its core, there really isnt much too this, its made up of two items, each containing their own choices:.
Once we decide which of those we want, we are away. It also comes in Birchyou can see the two below, with Birch on the left slightly brighter and a harsher grain, then Oak on the right, a little bit duller and less detailed grain. Perhaps a wood expert can fill me in on the difference between Oak and Birch, however, I do know I went for Oak and I am very happy. The ALEX drawers are great, they come in a few colours but I opted for this grey, as I want a nice dark brown for my top wood piece, and think the two will go well together spoiler alert, they do.
Plus it looks great as you can see below, you can see how Jensen did it here. Finish your wood however you like, you can use a stain or a varnish if you like the colour of the raw wood, the varnish will accentuate all the grain, I opted for a dark Danish oil similar to this.
Here we can see my friends desk who did his at the same time yes, we built the exact same ultimate IKEA setup, because it is that ultimatewhich ended with a very smooth and glossy finish, and still has that finish even now. The space my friend had above ended up being a couple of centimeters shy of the total size of the wood, so here the beauty of solid wood came in, it was simply cut to size, and now it looks like a custom fitted piece, which I guess in a way it is!
Again, to check out more about those techniques, have a look at the post below here on Rigz, all about cable management. In Guides By Kieron. Read more. Do you need a middle leg with this IKEA set up? Without a doubt the best bang for buck in this department, is a cheap light stripyou can get a fairly lengthy reel and even a wireless remote with a tonne of colour choices for a few pounds, and they go up from there in terms of features and apparent quality, but I ran a cheap one that lasted as long as my last desk remained in my possession years and it never had a fault!
Simply run the light strip on the underside of the desk, to create an awesome downward glow like this rig.

You can even follow suit and run some of that spare RGB lighting strip behind the monitor, for extra glow. Got cash to spend? I can also imagine this can would light up a small street if one were to try. Got your own spin on the IKEA battlestation? Table of contents.Description: I made this desk quite some time ago, so I may forget to mention a few steps.
I have built or assisted with 4 similar desks of varying size. This one is by far the biggest. The Setup I had a formal living room that I wanted to turn into an office. Instead of putting several desks next to eachother, I really wanted to make a Galant that would fill 3 walls of the room.
That would give me plenty of room for several computers, a TV, and some room for studying, etc. I started watching craigslist and visiting the As-Is section regularly. The Desk I started with 2 large rectangular Galant desks 63 x I arranged them as a corner desk, making an L shape, with the extension on one end. The trick was using the right frame pieces to make it one solid desk.
Those frames covered the 2 large Galant desks, and I used the regular extension frame for the extension desk piece. If I used the frame as designed, it would have been too far to the back of one of the desks. I drilled my own holes in the corner frame where the two pieces of the frame bolt together.
With my own holes, I had to use a nut at then end of 2 of the bolts. I also had to drill my own holes for the spots where the frame attaches to the table top, but only on one of the tables. I used T legs for the ends, and put A legs in the back of the desk where possible. If you prefer the look of the rounded corner, just put a Knos curved desk pad in the corner.
It looks good and is strong enough to be used. About a year later, I had finally acquired enough pieces to finish the rest of the desk. I used 2 corner Galant desks to complete the desk.
I joined them using another set of extension bars, then joined that to my previous desk with yet another set of extension bars. I used 3 more T legs on this part of the desk. The part that really makes this hack-worthy is the shelf on top of the desk. I decided to use Galant desk pieces for the shelf since they look great with the desk, and I find the Lack shelves to be somewhat cheap.
I think the diagram will show this much better and faster than I can write it. Simply take a Galant corner desk and cut where I have the red lines. Use Capita legs to elevate the shelf to whatever height you want, and put it on top of the desk. I chose to have my shelf 6 inches above the desk, but the Capita legs are also available in 4 and 8 inch heights.
I used 21 Capita legs due to the size of the shelf. Also make sure you place them far enough back in places where you plan on using the Knos desk pads. I have 2 corner Knos and 3 straight Knos on my desk.We have updated our operation in accordance with measures and guidelines required by related authorities; please check your local store page for operating hours and other information before making a visit.
