Recently, blog readers have asked me to write about scope and sequence in my biology class. Determining the best scope and sequence for your students is very difficult as a new teacher. What do I cover? And to what depth? I have found that my own personal preferred scope and sequence develop over time as I teach.

I hope that this is helpful to the new biology teachers out there who might get a general idea of how long each unit takes.

I know this would have helped me when I started! The sequence that I teach is pretty specific. How do I determine which unit comes first in biology? Here is my sequence and some scope information below. I am for 1 lab a week, but that may depend on time, school schedule, and lab material availability.

Scope and Sequence in my Biology Class

I post some lab ideas below and I hope to go more in depth into labs in my blog in future posts. Introduction to Life, Measurement, and the Scientific Method approx. How to design an experiment. How to measure using lab measurement tools. I like to do some basic labs in this unit to help students get on the same page, whatever their science background. I also discuss the characteristics of life, the basic domains of life, prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and basic classification scientific names.

Labs for scientific method unit: Termite Experiment Design lab,Measurements Lab a basic metric system review and measuring volume, length, mass practice laband other activities if time allows.

I introduce lab report section writing and I have my students learn slowly throughout the year. Biochemistry approx. I have a whole blog post about how I teach biochemistry. I teach this first because I really truly believe that for students to truly understand biology, they need to know what living things are made of. What more basic question is there? I focus on water and the 4 macromolecules of life in this unit.

My bestselling beads and pipe cleaners activities are truly the backbone of the unit in my classroom. Labs for biochemistry: Detecting Macromolecules Lab using lab reagents to detect macromolecules in foodWater Properties Lab I use stations to have students examine different properties of water. Life is compartmentalized and we talk about parallels between organelle relationships and a town or city analogy.

I use a lot of diagram coloring pages. This is my favorite project for this unit. Labs for cells and organelles: we use the microscope a lot in this unit. I usually do one lab where they learn how to use the microscope, one lab where they examine slides of bacterial, animal, and plant cells, and another lab where we examine pond water organisms.

Cell Transport approx. Cell transport can be a really difficult topic to teach and I have a blog entry about it. Visuals are KEY. I also like to do an onion cell or water plant Elodea cells lab where students examine cells before and after adding salty water to them, to see osmosis in action in a living cell. This unit is also typically difficult for a lot of students, so the scope can change dramatically, based on the level I am teaching.

It works well to follow after the units where students learn what living things are made of and how they get their new atoms and molecules.Gregor Johann Mendel conducted hybridisation experiments on garden pea Pisum sativum for seven years and proposed the laws of inheritance in living organisms.

He is also known as Father of Genetics. So, several generations can be studied within a short period. Which plants provide many easily detectable contrasting characters. A true-breeding line refers to one that have undergone continuous self-pollination and showed stable trait inheritance and expression for several generations.

Mendel selected 14 true-breeding pea plant varieties, as pair, which were similar except for one character with contrasting traits. For example, he crossed tall and dwarf pea plants to study the inheritance of one gene. The seeds produced by this cross were grown to develop into plants of Fillial 1 progeny or F 1 -generation F 1 -plants. Only one of the parental traits was expressed in F 1 -generation, while at F 2 stage, both the traits were expressed in the ratio of Now-a-days these factors are known as genes.

It is a graphical representation to calculate the probability of all possible genotypes of off springs in a genetic cross Fig. The production of gametes by the parents, the formation of zygote, the F 1 and F 2 — germinations can be explained by Punnett square. It was developed by British geneticist RC Punnett.

The law of dominance states that when two alternative forms of a trait or character genes are present in an organism, only one factor expresses itself in F 1 -progeny and is called dominant, while the other that remains masked is called recessive. This law is used to explain the expression of only one of the parental characters in a monohybrid cross in the F 1 -generation and the expression of both in the F 2 -generation. It also explains the proportion of obtained in theF 2 -generation.

This law states that the alleles do not show any blending and both the characters are recovered as such in the F 2 -generation, though one of these is not seen in the F 1 -generation. Due to this, the gametes are pure for a character. The parents contain two alleles during gamete formation. The factors or alleles of a pair segregate from each other such that a gamete receives only one of the two factors. This law states that when two pairs of traits are combined in a hybrid, segregation of one pair of character is independent of the other pair of characters at the time of gamete formation.

It also get randomly rearranged in the offsprings producing both parental and new combinations of characters. The law was proposed by Mendel, based on the results of dihybrid crosses, where inheritance of two traits were considered simultaneously. Understanding how mitosis and meiosis work is essential for understanding independent assortment, genetics, and evolution so I spend a lot of time in this unit.

Virtual Cell: Mitosis. A teacher at a school I used to work at does a really cool project during this unit. She has student groups create stop motion animation videos of either mitosis or meiosis! Students are allowed to use any materials they want and the video has to have a minimum of 50 pictures but more is way better!

When we co-taught a course, we required the regular level students create videos for mitosis and the honors level students created videos for meiosis. Students really had fun with this and manipulating their materials to make the videos really helped them to cement the processes into memory.

Here is one of my favorite student videos: Lego Meiosis. I use diagrams and coloring activities to help students identify the components and understand how chromosomes in cells move throughout the mitosis or meiosis timeline.
